It took more than a year, but I finally did it. Now that my hair is long enough, I was inspired (and excited) to test out the curling wand for some beachy waves! Liz of
Late Afternoon had an awesome tutorial last month (
here) that was really simple and easy to learn from. Peace Love Shea also has an amazing post showing how to perfect those Cali beach waves of hers using a barreled curling iron (
here).
Tips to help you get this style in less than 15 minutes!
1.
Hair brush: Brush out your hair so that it won't frizz when you wrap it around the curling iron. Use a clip to divide your hair into quarter sections. Start off with the bottom quarters, then work your way up using different sized pieces ranging from 1/2 inch - 2 inches. I parted my hair in the middle here, but a side part can give a more romantic vibe (as seen in
this blog post).
2. Curling Wand: I purchased
mine from
TJ Maxx on clearance. Remember, the wand doesn't have to be a fancy brand to get the job done (similar ones
here and
here). It's key to curl your hair outwards, away from your face.. and be careful of burns! Wear that Michael Jackson glove proudly.
3. Finishing touches: Try a texture spray like
Bumble and Bumble's Surf Spray of even some of your boyfriend's pomade to finish off your look. Use your fingers to tease out and loosen the curls for a more relaxed look and you're good to go!
4. Always use protection: Heat protection, that is. Don't forget to treat your hair with a heat protectant spray whenever curling or flat ironing, like
this one or
this one. It'll keep your hair looking healthy and prevent split ends.
